Truth & Consequences

At Richmond Virginia Orthodontics, informed patients make the best decisions for their oral health. Unfortunately, longstanding myths about dental care can lead to hesitation or neglect that puts your smile at risk. Let’s clear up some of the most common misconceptions, so you can then take care of your teeth with confidence, and some with and without braces.

Flossing is optional – Flossing is essential. It reaches the areas your toothbrush can’t, removing food particles and plaque from between your teeth and along the gum line. Skipping flossing allows bacteria to thrive, increasing your risk of gum disease and tooth decay.

Depending on the type, you may have to change the way you traditionally floss for metal braces, but talk to us at Richmond Virginia Orthodontics for the best cleaning methods.

Brushing harder cleans better – Brushing too forcefully can do more harm than good. It can irritate your gums, wear down your enamel, and cause sensitivity. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and gentle, circular motions.

Sugar is the only cause of cavities – Cavities form when bacteria in your mouth produce acids that erode tooth enamel. These bacteria feed not only on sugar, but also on starches found in foods like bread and pasta. Poor oral hygiene and infrequent dental visits can also accelerate decay.

Only metal braces can straighten teeth – While traditional braces are effective, they’re not your only option. Invisalign® clear aligners offer a nearly invisible, removable solution for many alignment issues—without the inconvenience or appearance of metal braces. You can clean your teeth with ease.

White teeth mean healthy teeth – White teeth can still have underlying problems like gum disease or cavities. Color alone isn’t a reliable indicator of oral health.

You should avoid the dentist or orthodontist during pregnancy – Pregnancy hormones can increase your risk of gum disease, making dental care even more important. Preventive checkups and cleanings are safe and recommended.

Baby teeth don’t matter as they fall out anyway – Baby teeth are vital for eating, speaking, and guiding permanent teeth into place. Neglecting them can lead to pain, speech delays, and orthodontic issues later on. Caring for baby teeth sets the stage for lifelong oral health.

Bringing your child in for simple checkups twice a year helps prevent cavities and keeps their smile healthy. These visits also teach good habits that last a lifetime and help your child feel comfortable with the dentist or the orthodontist. Additionally, consider seeing an orthodontist for your child around age seven. Aligning teeth or detecting something early can save them from longer treatment or costs in the future.

Do braces or Invisalign hurt?  – While some may have a little bit of irritation, there are solutions that can help, like wax for braces. Talk to your orthodontist, who can make the appropriate recommendations to alleviate any issues.
