How Does Invisalign Work?

1. New patient exam. We talk about your goals, examine your teeth and bite and take the digital images we need.

3. Your custom treatment plan. Dr. Schanilec or Dr. Gladwell maps out every stage of your tooth movement. You’ll see a preview of how your smile is expected to change.
4. Aligner delivery. We fit your first set of aligners, place any small attachments your plan needs and show you how to wear and clean your trays.
5. Progress checks. You’ll switch to a new set of aligners on a set schedule, usually every one to two weeks. You’ll visit us every couple of months so we can make sure everything stays on track.

To get the results you’re after, you’ll need to wear your aligners 20 to 22 hours a day. Take them out only to eat, drink anything besides water and clean your teeth.

How Long Does Invisalign Treatment Take?

It depends on your smile. Mild spacing or crowding can take as little as six months. Most of our adult and teen Invisalign patients finish in about 12 to 18 months. More complex bite corrections can take longer. We’ll give you a realistic timeline after your exam, so you’ll know what to expect before you commit.

How consistently you wear your aligners makes a big difference. If you leave them out too often, your teeth fall behind the plan. If you wear them as directed, you’re much more likely to finish on time.

Can You Eat Whatever You Want With Invisalign?

Yes, and that’s one of the biggest reasons people choose Invisalign over traditional braces. Because you take your aligners out to eat, there’s no list of banned foods. Corn on the cob at a summer cookout, popcorn at a movie and caramel apples in the fall are all fine.

There are two rules to follow. First, brush (or at least rinse well) before you put your aligners back in, so you don’t trap food against your teeth. Second, drink only plain water while your aligners are in. Coffee, tea, soda and juice can stain the trays and hold sugar against your teeth.
