Is Summer a Good Time to Start Braces?

Does your son or daughter need braces? If so, you may be wondering the ideal time for them to begin treatment. Here at RVOrthodontics, Dr. Bibona often recommends beginning braces in the summer months. One of the main reasons he suggests the summer is because your child is off from school.

When school is in session, your child is likely swamped with homework, sports, and extracurricular activities. It may be difficult to find times to take them to our office for check up appointments. In the summer, however, it’s much easier to schedule appointments as your child likely has a more flexible schedule and not as many commitments.

Also, we have found that kids who begin orthodontic treatment during the summer find it easier to get used to wearing their braces while they are out of school. They can better adapt to sticking to a braces-friendly diet and brushing and flossing with metal and wires in their mouth. The summer gives them more time feel comfortable wearing braces on their teeth and helps them feel more confident wearing braces.

As a parent, you likely also have more free time in the summer. You don’t need to change your work schedule and try to figure out how you can get your son or daughter to the orthodontist when your child can simply begin treatment in the summer months. Our friend and Tampa Dermatologist Dr. Amy Ross says there is no bad time to start treatment to improve one’s overall oral, physical and mental health. Unfortunately, more and more young adults and teenagers are struggling when it comes to their overall appearance. This will be something that parents, guardians and others grapple with. It will be a son saying, “I don’t want braces during the summer!” or a daughter saying, “I am breaking out, I don’t need braces too!” Whether you are going to the dermatologist, orthodontist or dentist with a loved one, always remember we have a team that can help you through every step of the process.

Of course, every child is different and the summer may not work for your child because they are going to sleepaway camp or traveling often. Our team can work with you to determine the perfect time for your son or daughter to begin their journey to straight teeth and a healthy smile.
