Can I Play Pickup Basketball with Invisalign

Invisalign is changing the world of orthodontics today making it easy to participate in daily activities while undergoing treatment! The Invisalign clear aligners are easy because they’re removable and practically invisible so people don’t even realize you are wearing them. Additionally, there aren’t any wires or metal brackets so there is no need to have to worry about something breaking because they aren’t a part of the Invisalign experience to begin with!

With Invisalign, you shouldn’t have to alter your daily routine, which includes your workout routine! If you are wondering if you can play pickup basketball with Invisalign aligners you can! The only thing you may want to be aware of is drinking during playing. Drinking water is okay to do with Invisalign aligners in your mouth, but do not drink any sports drinks or Gatorade while wearing your aligners because the sugars in these drinks can stick to the aligners and cause build up of bad bacteria. If you wear a mouthguard while playing basketball, you may want to get a “stock” mouthguard so that it can fit in your mouth while your aligners are in your mouth at the same time. In this way, you can wear your trays and prevent any possible injury from occurring.

Additionally, if you have a mouth guard that you wear during basketball, do make sure that you clean it just like you would your Invisalign retainers with gentle soap and water. The bacteria in your mouth tends to build up over time and can stick to the surfaces of your mouth guard and aligner! Daily cleansing of both of these can help to prevent the bacteria from accumulating and slow the process of it building up over time.
