Two of the issues you may face on your way to achieving a beautiful smile are overbites and crowding, which braces can help correct. But are there alternatives that don’t involve covering your teeth in metal that can affect your appearance and confidence? Find out if Invisalign is the solution you’re looking for at Richmond Virginia Orthodontics.
What is an overbite?
When there is an overbite, the upper front teeth extend over the lower front teeth for more than the expected distance. An overbite strains the jaw, produces discomfort and headaches, wears down tooth enamel, worsens sleep apnea, and may make talking a challenge.
What is teeth crowding?
If the patient’s jaw does not have enough room for all their teeth to align properly, crowding can produce overlapping, misaligned, or twisted teeth. This makes brushing and flossing harder and increases the risk of gum disease and cavities. This condition can result from having extra teeth, losing baby teeth prematurely, or genetic factors.
Correcting bite problems
As we know, braces have been the traditional method for correcting bite problems. Nowadays, patients have numerous options to help correct various types of misalignments.
What about Invisalign?
Invisalign has proven to be an excellent way to correct overbites and teeth crowding. It consists of clear aligners that fit over teeth to guide them into the correct position. The patient only needs to wear these appliances for 20-22 hours a day, which allows them to eat normally and clean their teeth as usual when the aligners are off. Because the aligner tray is transparent, it does not affect the appearance.
How does Invisalign treatment work?
Invisalign treatment starts with an initial consultation with our dental staff, which allows us to examine the condition of your teeth and determine the best course of action. We utilize digital scans and X-rays to investigate malocclusions further and customize a personalized treatment plan. We then create a set of aligners that you wear for approximately two to three weeks to gradually move the teeth into place before switching to a new set.
Regular visits to our office are necessary to check on your progress. Once treatment is complete after one or two years, you’ll most likely wear a retainer to keep your aligned teeth in place.
