If you’re considering Invisalign® to straighten your teeth, your first appointment is an exciting step toward a healthier, more confident smile. While the process is straightforward, understanding what to expect helps patients feel more comfortable about what is to come.
Initial Consultation
The Invisalign® journey starts with a detailed consultation with your orthodontist who offers Invisalign® treatment. During this visit, the provider will evaluate your teeth, bite, and overall oral health. They’ll ask about your goals and whether you’re looking to fix crowding, close gaps, or improve bite alignment. This discussion helps determine if Invisalign® is the right treatment for your specific needs.
A thorough examination may include digital X-rays and possibly photos of the face and teeth. Some providers use a 3D intraoral scanner instead of traditional molds to create a digital model of your teeth. This scanner is quick, comfortable, and eliminates the need for messy impressions. The digital model enables planning and is essential for creating a customized treatment plan.
Treatment Planning
Using the images and scans, your provider will design a step-by-step Invisalign® plan. We use software to create a digital simulation showing how the teeth will move over time. You’ll be able to see a virtual preview of your future smile, which many patients find motivating and reassuring.
At this stage, the dentist or orthodontist will also explain how long your treatment will likely take, how many aligners you’ll need, and what kind of results you can expect. Richmond Virginia Orthodontics customizes every treatment plan to fit your needs and offers flexible financing options to fit all budgets.
Fitting and Instructions
If you decide to move forward, your provider will send your scans to Invisalign®’s lab to fabricate your aligners. This typically takes a few weeks. Once the aligners arrive, you’ll return for a fitting appointment. You may receive your first set of aligners at your initial visit if the office has an expedited process.
You’ll also receive instructions on how to wear and care for your aligners. Generally, aligners are worn 20 to 22 hours a day and are only removed for eating, drinking (except water), and cleaning your teeth.
Next Steps
You’ll have check-ins every 6 to 8 weeks or so to receive the next sets of aligners and monitor progress. These visits are generally quick and easy. The first Invisalign® appointment is designed to establish the foundation for a successful treatment.
With digital tools and professional guidance, you’ll walk away with a clear understanding of what to expect and one step closer to the smile you’ve always wanted. Call us today at Richmond Virginia Orthodontics and schedule your appointment.
